Generic Resources Form

Use the Generic Resource form to set up the generic categories of employees that you will use when you create your plans.

After users log on to Vision Planning, they can modify their plan-specific settings. The System Administrator uses Configuration > Planning to determine the options users can choose from.

Location

To display the form, complete the following step:

From the Vision Navigation menu, click Configuration > Planning > Generic Resources.

Toolbar

Field Description
Save Click this option to save the current generic resource.
New

Click New, then select one of the following options:

  • Select New Generic Resource to open a new, blank plan record.

  • Select Copy Generic Resource to make a copy of the generic resource. You can then save the copy under a new name and modify it.

  • Select Select Generic Resource to Copy to open the Generic Resource Lookup dialog, where you select a generic resource to copy. When you select a generic resource, Vision displays a copy of it. You can then save the copy under a new name and modify it as needed.

Delete Click this option to remove the current generic resource record. Use caution when you delete a generic resource.
Print

The Print menu offers these options:

  • Print Current Generic Resource — Print the current generic resource record.

  • Print Active Generic Resource — Print a group of generic resource records.

  • Select Generic Resource to Print — Select the generic resource that you want to print.

Help Click this option to display the Vision help system.

Fields

Field Description
Code Enter a unique alphanumeric code for the generic resource.
Name Enter a unique alphanumeric name for the generic resource.
Organization

Enter the organization for which the generic resource works. Organizations are discrete business units in your company. You can set up organizations by region, function, responsibility, and so on.

Complete one of the following actions:

  • Enter an organization name directly in this field.

  • Use the Quick Find feature to select an organization from your database.

  • Click and select an organization on the Organization Lookup.

Labor Category

Use this drop-down list to select a labor category for the generic resource, such as Principal, Project Manager, Architect, and so on.

You can change the labor category if the generic resource is not assigned to any project plans.

Labor Code

Enter the labor code associated with the generic resource.

Complete one of the following:

  • Enter a labor code directly in this field.

  • Use the Quick Find feature to select a labor code from your database.

  • Click and select a labor code on the Labor Code Lookup.

    You can only select a single labor code mask. Available values are labor code masks from labor code billing rate tables that are marked as available for use in planning.

    • The code is shown in the field when a selection is made.

    • This is conditionally shown.

    • The labor code mask may only be edited if the generic resource is not assigned to any project plans.

    • Administrators must select labor code combinations that are consistent with the labor code billing rate tables that have been established for use in Planning. Therefore, only labor code masks set up in rate tables are available.

Supervisor

Enter the name of the generic resource's supervisor.

Complete one of the following:

  • Enter a supervisor's name directly in this field.

  • Use the Quick Find feature to select a supervisor from your database.

  • Click and select a supervisor on the Employee Lookup.

When you enter an employee name in this field, Vision creates a hyperlink between the employee name and the corresponding Employee Info Center record. You can then click the name in this field to open the Employee Info Center record in the current browser window. Or, right-click the name and then click Open in New Window on the shortcut menu to open the Employee Info Center record in a new browser window.

Status Use this drop-down list to select a status of Activeor Inactive. You cannot assign an inactive generic resource to a project plan.

Skills Grid

Use this grid to enter skill information for the generic resource.

Field Description
Skills Drop-down Click the drop-down arrow on a grid header to complete any of the following actions:
  • To print grid data, click Print. When the Print Preview form displays, click File > Print to send the grid data to your default printer.
  • To export grid data to an Excel spreadsheet, click Export to Excel. When Microsoft Excel opens, use its features to modify, print, or email the data, or to save the spreadsheet file locally.
  • To turn on grouping for a grid, click Enable Grouping. When a field displays with the instruction: "Drag a column header here to group by that column," drag and drop column headers into this field, in the sequence that you want them to display.

Not all options are available on all grids.

Insert Click this option to insert skill information on the Skills grid.
Delete Click this option to delete skill information from the Skills grid.
Skill Click in this field and use the drop-down list to associate a skill, such as Computer Programmer or Project Manager, with the generic resource. You define skill options using the Employee Skill/Discipline Code Table in Code Table Configuration.
Level Click in this field and use the drop-down list to select a skill level for the employee, such as 1-2 years. You define skill level options using the Employee Skill/Discipline Level Code Table in Code Table Configuration.
Primary Select this option if the skill is the generic resource's primary skill.
