Project Variables Form

Project Variables allow you to store values that change for each snapshot of a project, and use them in metrics. These variables exist at the workbook level but the individual values can be set at the project level.

For example, you might want a count of remaining contract milestones for a project to compare the milestones found in the schedule. You can define a project variable called Contract_Milestones and enter the number remaining for the initial project. As you load monthly snapshots, you can enter the remaining incomplete contract milestones for each one and use that value in the metrics.

The Project Variables pane on the left side of the form lists all available variables. You can click on a variable to view and edit it or you can create a new variable. You can use these variable as part of a metric formula or filter.

After you define the project variable on the Metrics tab, you can add the value for each project or snapshot. You can either do this on the S2 // Diagnostics tab using the Variable Definition dialog box, or on the S1 // Projects Activity Details Pane Project Variables tab. One advantage of using the Variable Definition dialog box is that you can see the trend over time. In addition, you can click on the variable and use the Variable Description field at the bottom of the dialog box to see how the variable is to be used.
