Use the Process Server to schedule processes to run automatically and in the background. When you submit a processing job to the process server, you free the submitting computer to be used for other tasks. You can schedule each submitted process to run only after a specific date or time, during the night, or on weekends. You can dedicate each queue to a specific server. For example, you can assign large jobs to the server with the largest capacity.
Examples of processes that can run on the process server include:
Reports
Scheduled alerts
The creation of Progress entries
PM Compass has three main applications that you can use to organize and maintain processes and process servers.
Profile Editor โ This is used to create profiles that allow you to specify the sequence in which jobs will run. A profile is a group of sequential processes that can be scheduled together. You can use the Profile Editor to arrange process sequence, remove a process in a sequence, and submit the profile to a schedule. An example of a profile you might create is a batch of reports that will be generated at the end of the week. You can submit all of those reports to a single named profile (for example, End of Week Reports) and then schedule that profile to run over the weekend.
Process Queue Manager โ Use the Process Queue Manager to stop, suspend, or restart processes that are waiting to run, resubmit a process to the process server, or delete a process. It is also useful for troubleshooting processes that are not working correctly. To view detailed information about a process, use the Process Queue Detail dialog box.
Process Server Management โ This is used to perform actions on the Process Server itself, like running or stopping it, or viewing its events. You can cancel, hold or restart individual processes. You can also view the messages created by each process server.
The EPM Security Administrator (EPM SA) allows you to set separate security settings for:
Profile Editor
Process Queue Manager
Process Server Management
This means that you can set up security so that users can use the Process Queue Manager but not necessarily have access to other options like Process Server Management.
