Preparation

Before you configure PIM to use the SMTP Relay mail flow provider, you must first identify your SMTP Relay methodology.

Consider the following to determine your organization's internal/external SMTP Relay approach:
  • If you are using an internal Exchange instance to manage internal outbound SMTP traffic directly to recipients, with existing security/connector rules for your PIM web server, simply point PIM to the IP/DNS address of your internal SMTP server.
  • If your setup involves an internal Exchange instance for managing internal outbound SMTP traffic sent directly to O365 for onward delivery to recipients, with existing security/connector rules for your PIM web server, you can also point PIM to the IP/DNS address of your internal SMTP server.
  • If your setup routes mail directly to O365 for onward delivery to recipients, with existing security/connector rules for your PIM web server, configure PIM to point to your O365 SMTP endpoint: yourdomain-com.mail.protection.outlook.com.
  • If you are configuring a new on-premises installation of PIM, set up inbound and outbound relay rules for the PIM web server's IP address, either in Exchange or directly in O365 (if not using internal Exchange). Refer to Microsoft's guidance for more details on configuring SMTP relay connectors in O365.
