You can use the Dependency Details dialog box to view, update, or add plan notes and/or view, update, add, or remove dependencies for a plan level simultaneously instead of drawing them on the Gantt chart. You can also add lag and lead time to dependencies.
To create dependency relationships:
-
In the Navigation pane, select
.
-
Click the Schedule tab.
-
On the Actions bar, click
Check Out. The Dependency Details dialog opens in view-only mode if not checked out.
-
Select the work breakdown structure (WBS) element for which you want to create a dependency relationship and do either of the following to open the Dependency Details dialog box:
- Double-click the Gantt bar in the grid.
- Click the row tools option in the
Level field () and select
Dependency Details.
The following (non-editable) fields display at top of the Dependency Details dialog box:
- The selected WBS element along with the path making up this branch of the plan WBS. Click the link to display a snapshot of the project's details.
- The task description.
- The plan start and end dates. These dates automatically update if you change the duration by dragging the ends of the Gantt bar or if you shift the dates by dragging and moving the entire Gantt bar. The dates also update here if you enter different dates on any planning tab.
- The duration between the start and end dates, in working days.
-
Use the
Notes text entry field to record any notes or details related to the selection.
-
Each dependency relationship is based on two selected levels: one is considered the predecessor (it leads the relationship) and the other is the successor (it is dependent on the predecessor). Do one of the following depending on the role you want to assign to the WBS element you selected in Step 4:
-
Select a
Relationship to specify how the dependency between the selected elements is structured:
- Finish-to-Start: The predecessor must finish before the successor can start. This is the most common relationship used when planning projects.
- Start-to-Start: The predecessor must start before the successor can start.
- Finish-to-Finish: The predecessor must finish before the successor can finish.
- Start-to-Finish: The predecessor must start before the successor can finish.
-
To specify a delay (lag) or an overlap (lead) between the predecessor and successor relationship, type the
Lag (positive number) or
Lead (negative number) value as an amount of time, in working days, or click the up or down arrow to select values. The maximum allowed value is 4000 and decimal places are not allowed.
Lag indicates a delay between the predecessor and successor relationship, in working days. For example, if the
Relationship is
Finish-to-Start, you can specify a lag time of five days so that the successor does not start until five days after the predecessor is finished.
Lead indicates an overlap in the predecessor and successor relationship, in working days. For example, if the
Relationship is
Finish-to-Start, you can specify a lead time of five days so that the successor can start five days before the predecessor task is finished.
Be aware that adding lag or lead time could extend the plan dates.
-
Repeat steps 6-8 to create additional dependencies.
-
Click
Apply to save your changes.
If you try to create a relationship that would cause a circular dependency with existing relationships, the Circular Dependency Not Allowed dialog box displays where you can review a list of the relationships that caused the problem. Review the predecessor, successor, and relationship type for all relationships and remove or modify them as needed. For more details, see
Circular Dependency Not Allowed Dialog Box.
Yellow connector lines for each relationship display on the Gantt chart, linking each predecessor to the successor(s). If you change the dates for any predecessor elements, all successors change accordingly.

Create Schedule Dependencies
|
This video shows you the different methods for creating schedule dependencies on the Schedule tab of Project Planning. These methods allow you to identify predecessors and successors, select relationship types, and add lag/lead time for dependencies.
