Pipeline System Dashpart

The Pipeline dashpart is a system dashpart that provides a summary of compensation and fees for the projects in your pipeline represented as a chart. For each dimension value on the vertical axis, the chart displays total compensation and estimated fees, as well as total compensation and weighted fees, in separate bars.

Projects must have the following fields populated to be included in the Pipeline dashpart:
  • Total compensation for projects that are won
  • Estimated Fee
  • Estimated Start Date or Actual Start Date
  • Estimated End Date or Actual End Date
You can use searches to select the projects that are included, and you can specify the vertical axis dimension and the time frame. If your firm uses multiple currencies, you can also select the currency in which you want to display pipeline amounts.

Pipeline Calculation

The pipeline dashpart reports the total compensation for projects that have a stage step of won and fees for project that have a stage step of In Pursuit, Lost or Do Not Pursue.

To determine each project's contribution to pipeline fees, Vantagepoint spreads the compensation or fees for each project evenly across the period from that project's start date to its end date to determine per-day fee. It then uses the project start and end dates to determine the number of days each project will contribute fees during the Pipeline chart time frame, and multiplies that number of days by the per-day fee amounts to determine that project's contribution to the fees shown in the chart.

Example: The number of days between the start and end dates for Project ABC is 300 days, and the estimated fee for the project is 3,000,000. Based on that information, Vantagepoint calculates a per-day fee amount of 10,000 (3,000,000 total fee / 300 days). You select Next 6 Months as the time frame for the Pipeline chart. Vantagepoint uses the start and end dates for Project ABC to determine that the project would contribute fees for 120 of the days in that six month time frame. As a result, Project ABC's pipeline fee contribution for that time frame is 1,200,000 (120 days x 10,000 fee per day).

A project's contribution to weighted fee for the Pipeline chart is calculated in exactly the same way, once the weighted fee is calculated (Estimated fee x Probability).

Because a start, an end date, and a total compensation or an estimated fee amount are required for the calculation of pipeline fee amounts, the chart excludes projects that do not have those values.

Toolbar

The toolbar contains a set of filters that you can utilize to fine tune the displayed data in the pipeline chart.

Field Description
Search Filter The search filter is the first option on the dashpart toolbar. The name of the currently applied search filter is also displayed on the toolbar. Select one of the following to specify which projects are displayed on the chart:
  • All: Displays all projects (both active and inactive).
  • Active: Displays only projects with an active status.
  • My Active: Displays only projects with which you are associated as a team member.

To apply a custom search filter, select one of the saved custom searches listed below the standard search filters, or click New Search and then create a new custom search. On the New Project Search dialog box, you can specify search values for selected fields in the records.

When you apply a custom search to a Pipeline system dashpart without saving it, the Edit Search label is displayed in the toolbar. Hover over this label to display an info bubble that describes the custom search criteria that you used in your custom search.

Dimension The dimension field is located on the right of the search filter on the dashpart toolbar. Click the currently selected dimension to change the dimension by which pipeline fee is broken down on the vertical axis (for example, by probability, primary client, market, stage, and so on).

The dimension selections include all standard and custom fields for projects that have a lookup list or drop-down list of values. In addition, a By Month option enables you to display a month-by-month breakdown of fees for the time frame you select for the chart.

Time frame The time frame field is located on the right of the dimension field on the dashpart toolbar. Click the currently selected time frame to display a drop-down menu with other time frame options that you can select to change the overall period of time represented on the chart.

The fee bars on the chart represent the total estimated or weighted fee for the selected time frame. For example, if you select Next 6 Months (Projected), each bar represents the estimated or weighted fee for that group of projects for the next six months, starting on the current date.

Currency The currency field displays on the right of the time frame field on the dashpart toolbar when your firm uses multiple currencies. Click the currently selected currency to display the drop-down menu where other currency options are available.

Chart Components

Field Description
Vertical axis values The vertical axis of the chart displays the values for the dimension that you select in the dimension field of the toolbar. Total Compensation and Estimated fee and Total Compensation and Weighted fee bars display for each dimension value. If no pipeline fee exists for a dimension value, that value does not display on the axis.
Horizontal axis values The horizontal axis of the chart displays the scale of fee amounts.
Bars The Pipeline system dashpart contains bars that represent the following project metrics for the time frame:
  • Weighted fee: This bar displays the sum of weighted fees for projects with the project stage step of In Pursuit, Lost, and Do Not Pursue. However, if the CRM and/or CRM Plus modules are activated, but you do not have the Resource Planning module or any of the Accounting modules, then the weighted fee is based on projects with a project stage step of In Pursuit, Lost, and Do Not Pursue.

Weighted fee for a project = Estimated fee x Probability.

  • Estimated fee: This bar displays the sum of estimated fees for projects with the project stage step of In Pursuit, Lost, and Do Not Pursue. However, if the CRM and/or CRM Plus modules are activated, but you do not have the Resource Planning module or any of the Accounting modules, then the estimated fee is based on projects with a project stage step of In Pursuit, Lost, and Do Not Pursue.
  • Total Compensation + Weighted fee: This bar displays the sum total compensation and the sum of weighted fees. Total Compensation displays for projects with a stage step of Won. A weighted fee displays for projects with the project stage step of In Pursuit, Lost, and Do Not Pursue.
  • Total Compensation + Estimated fee: This bar displays the sum of total compensation and the sum of estimated fees for projects. Total Compensation displays for projects with a stage step of Won. An Estimated fee displays for projects with the project stage step of In Pursuit, Lost, and Do Not Pursue.

Hover over a bar to display the corresponding fee amount and the number of projects contributing to that amount.

If your firm uses multiple currencies, project amounts are converted to a single presentation currency for the Pipeline system dashpart, based on currency configuration in Vantagepoint and using today's date as the exchange date. The initial default currency for the dashpart is the functional currency for your home company. Use the currency field on the toolbar if you want to display the chart using a different currency.

Vantagepoint spreads the compensation and fee amount for each project evenly across the period from that project's start date to its end date to determine per-day fee value. It then uses the project start and end dates to determine the number of days each project will contribute fee during the Pipeline system dashpart time frame, and multiplies that number of days by the per-day fee amounts to determine that project's contribution to the fee shown in the chart.
