Document Numbering Schemes

Effective document identification is paramount for project success. Employing robust numbering schemes in DLM enhances collaboration, streamlines processes, and ensures compliance with industry standards.

Document Lifecycle Manager (DLM) number schemes provide a systematic methodology for creating unique and informative document identifiers. These schemes consist of discrete facets, such as discipline, sheet type, and sequence, forming a structure like "AD107" where "AD" signifies discipline, "1" indicates sheet type, and "07" represents the sequential identifier.

Beyond the fundamental structure, DLM offers a variety of facet types to cater to diverse requirements. Project teams can utilize free text for custom information, fixed text for consistent elements, auto-numbering for sequential values, sets with predefined categories for controlled options, and codes linked to entities and organizations within DLM. This flexibility empowers users to customize schemes for optimal information representation.

To ensure uniqueness, every scheme must incorporate either an auto-numbering facet that automatically increments for sequential identifiers or a free text facet allowing non-repeating, user-defined values.

DLM enhances numbering capabilities with short numbers, an optional feature generating a concise secondary identifier for each document. Particularly useful in scenarios with space constraints or a need for easy reference, short numbers are invaluable, especially in ISO 19650 schemes. Additionally, short numbers can influence the behavior of auto-numbering facets. In cases where an auto-numbering facet would typically reset to 1 after reaching a certain point, incorporating it into the short number generation process ensures continuous incrementing, maintaining consistency in numbering logic.
