The data displayed in Backlog Analytics is calculated using a combination of revenue and cost data from Costpoint and revenue and cost budget data from an external budget file.

Calculation Dependencies |
Backlog calculations depend on the Actual and Target Rate settings established by the Costpoint Analytics Administrator. Backlog calculations always use the Owning Organization; there are no Performing Organization options. |
Overall Backlog Calculation |
The following formula is used to calculate overall backlog: Beginning backlog amount + expansion of existing contracts + (new contracts awarded + or additional/new funding on existing contracts) + backlog adjustments – revenue = Ending backlog |
Views of Backlog determined in User Options |
The following options impact backlog information:
|
Beginning and Ending Backlog |
Backlog trends include Beginning Backlog, which is the Ending Backlog of the period just before the range of periods selected. For a user to see correct Backlog trends, the Beginning Backlog must be computed. |
Revenue Budget |
If there is no backlog budget, the budgeted revenue for an existing project is used to reduce the existing backlog. |
The beginning backlog budget amount is not required in the backlog budget file. To derive the beginning backlog budget amount, you must look at the revenue budget file and backlog budget file for all existing projects. The first period that is found with a value will be used for all projects. This sets the beginning backlog budget amount equal to the beginning backlog actual amount. This is accomplished for all variations of the budget and backlog type separately (contract backlog/baseline budget, contract backlog/forecast, funded backlog/baseline budget, funded backlog/forecast). |

Contract Backlog |
Contract Backlog = Contract value – the ITD revenue The Contract Backlog is the funded and unfunded contract value that has not been spent. Usually, this is a trended measure because it can indicate future revenue streams. It can also show perspective on how the backlog changed over the recent past. Backlog can be measured in two dimensions— including amount of backlog remaining and the date on which the backlog will be expended based on the burn rate. If prior year revenue adjustments are included in the PSR tables, ITD revenue amounts may include those revenue adjustments, depending on how Costpoint Analytics is configured. For more information, see Adjustment Period.
|
Contract Backlog Budget |
Contract Backlog Budget = Contract Value – Budgeted Revenue to Date The budget value for new contracts and /or expansion of existing contracts less budgeted revenue. |
Contract Value |
Contract value is the total contract commitments, including funding agreements that have been received from the customer as well as the unfunded part of the commitment. |
Hard Backlog |
Hard Backlog is backlog that is calculated using only contracted or funded amounts for existing projects. |
Soft Backlog |
Soft Backlog is backlog that is calculated using contracted and funded amounts for existing projects plus the expected contract and funding amounts in proposals. |
Contract Expansion |
Contract Expansion is the increase in contract value from period to period.
|
Budget Contract Expansion |
For contract backlog, this is the budget value for expected contract expansion and is derived from the Backlog metric budget file. |
Forecast Contract Expansion |
For contract backlog, this is the forecast value for expected contract expansion and is derived from the Backlog metric budget file. |

Funded Backlog Calculation |
Funded Backlog = Funded Value – ITD Revenue If prior year revenue adjustments are included in the PSR tables, ITD revenue amounts may include those revenue adjustments, depending on how Costpoint Analytics is configured. For more information, see Adjustment Period. |
Funded Backlog Budget Calculation |
Funded Backlog Budget = Funded Value – Budgeted Revenue to Date This is the budget value for new contract funding, and/or additional funding for existing contracts less budgeted revenue. |
Funded Value |
Funded Value are contract commitments that have funding agreements with the customer. |
Unfunded Value |
Unfunded Value is the difference between the Contract Backlog and the Funded Backlog. |
Hard Backlog |
Hard Backlog is backlog that is calculated using only contracted or funded amounts for existing projects. |
Soft Backlog |
Soft Backlog is backlog that is calculated using contracted and funded amounts for existing projects, plus the expected contract and funding amounts in proposals. |
