Using the Project Planning Application
On the Plan form in the Projects hub, you can assign employees and generic labor resources, expense types, and consultant types to projects, and schedule those assignments. You can also enter planned hours for labor resources and planned monetary amounts for expenses and consultants. You can enter project planning information not only for won projects but also for projects you are pursuing, so planning can begin even before the contract is awarded and can be carried forward seamlessly when you win the job.
When you add a new project in Vantagepoint, a project plan is automatically added as well, based on default settings.
Project planning is available if your company or enterprise has activated the Accounting module. You do not need to have the Resource Planning module.
To access the project plan, navigate to
. On the Plan form, project managers can enter plan dates at all work breakdown structure levels, assign employees and generic labor resources, expense types, and consultant types to work breakdown structure elements, and enter anticipated date ranges for those assignments. They can also enter planned hours for labor resources and planned amounts for units, expenses, and consultants. Each project has only one plan. However, information from that plan can be viewed and updated from multiple places in Vantagepoint: Plan form in the Projects hub, Project View in Resource Management, or Resource View in Resource Management. Each of these access points provides a different perspective on the plan.
If you also have the Resource Planning module, on the Schedule tab of the Plan form, you can view and edit the start and finish dates for the work breakdown structure (WBS) elements for the project in a Gantt chart format. You can create dependency relationships between WBS elements on a project plan and ultimately build your project's critical path. Establishing dependencies and a critical path on a project plan empowers a project manager to quickly understand and adjust for project schedule changes and risks. Schedule dates are also streamlined so that when dates change on one level, all of the dependent levels are automatically updated, not just the parent/child relationship.
