Contents of the Add Units Dialog Box

Use the Add Units dialog box to add one or more unit assignments to the project plan for a work breakdown structure (WBS) element.

You can assign units only to the lowest-level elements in a given branch of the plan WBS. You cannot add new assignments for a dormant element or any elements under it in the WBS.

Field Description
Unit Name Enter or select a unit that you want to assign to the WBS element. You can type part of the unit name or number in this field, or you can click to search for the unit on the Units Lookup dialog box. This column displays the names of those units.

You can select the same unit more than once for a given WBS element. However, a WBS element cannot have more than one unit assignment with the same combination of unit number, account, and unit table.

If you select a unit but have not yet clicked Save on this dialog box, you can make another selection for that row. However, if you save the selection on this dialog box and then decide to change it, you must either use the Reassign option for the assignment row in the grid on the Units tab, or you must delete the assignment row entirely and add a new one.

Unit Number This column displays the unit number for each unit that you select for assignment.
Unit Table This column displays the unit table for each unit that you select for assignment on the Units Lookup dialog box. The unit table contains cost and billing rates used to calculate planned amounts, along with other billing and accounting information for the unit.
Only units from unit tables that meet all of the following requirements are displayed for your selection on the Units Lookup dialog box:
  • The status of the unit table must be Active.
  • If Vantagepoint is set up to have multiple companies, the company with which the unit table is associated through its organization must match the company with which the lowest WBS element is associated through its organization.
  • If Vantagepoint is set up to have multiple currencies and the Use Billing (Not Project) Currency for Reporting option is set to Yes on the Labor Options form (Settings > Accounting > Labor Options), the cost currency and billing currency for the unit table must be the same as the project currency and billing currency for the project on the Overview tab of the Projects form. If the option is set to No, both the cost currency and billing currency for the unit table must match the project currency for the project.
Account Enter or select the debit account for the unit assignment. You can type part of the account name, number, or account type in this field, or you can click to search for the account on the Account Search dialog box.

If you select a unit but have not yet clicked Save on this dialog box, you can make another account selection for that row. However, if you save the unit selection on this dialog box and then decide to change the account, you must either use the Reassign option for the assignment row in the grid on the Units tab, or you must delete the assignment row entirely and add a new one.

Account Type This column displays the account type (for example, Direct or Reimbursable Expense) for the account that you select in Account.
+ Add Units Click this option below the grid to display the Units Lookup dialog box and select another unit.
Save When you have selected all the units that you want to assign to the WBS element, click Save.

A given WBS element cannot have more than one unit assignment with the same combination of unit number, account, and unit table. If the assignments to be saved include any duplicate assignments, all valid assignments are saved, but the Add Units dialog box remains open with the duplicates displayed. You can then change a duplicate to make it valid, delete it from the grid, or click Cancel to discard the duplicates and close the dialog box.

If all the new assignments are valid, they are saved and the dialog box closes.
