What Happens When You Reassign Unit Quantities

When you assign unit quantities in a project plan, you can transfer all or part of the assignment to another unit or to a different account at a later time. What happens when you make a reassignment depends on the options that you choose on the Reassign Units dialog box.

If You Reassign All Planned Quantities for the Entire Assignment Date Range

If you reassign all planned quantities for the entire assignment date range, Vantagepoint creates a new assignment for the receiving unit. The assignment start and end dates are the same, and the planned quantities are spread across calendar periods exactly as they were for the original assignment.

The original assignment is deleted, unless either of the following is true:

  • Job-to-date (JTD) quantities exist for that assignment.
  • The assignment was previously saved as part of the plan baseline.

If either or both of these apply, the planned quantities are set to zero, but the assignment remains part of the plan.

If You Reassign All Planned Quantities for Only Part of the Assignment Date Range

If you reassign all planned quantities but only for a part of the assignment date range, Vantagepoint does the following:

  • Creates a new assignment for the receiving unit using the reassignment period dates that you specify as start and end dates on the Reassign Units dialog box.
  • Reassigns the planned quantities that fall within the reassignment period to the receiving unit. Those quantities are spread across calendar periods exactly as they were for the original assignment.
  • Adjusts the planned quantities remaining for the original assignment to reflect the assignment.

If You Reassign Only a Portion of the Planned Quantities

If you reassign less than 100 percent of the planned quantities, Vantagepoint creates a new assignment for the receiving unit for the assignment period that you specify. The planned quantities are spread across calendar periods exactly as they were for the original assignment, except that the number of quantities for each calendar period is reduced proportionally based on the percentage that you reassign.

The original assignment remains. The start and end dates are the same as before, but the quantities for each calendar period are reduced proportionally based on the percentage reassigned to the other unit.

If the Unit that Receives the Reassignment Has an Existing Assignment

If you reassign planned quantities to a unit that already has an assignment, Vantagepoint adds the reassigned quantities to the existing assignment, and the assignment start and end dates are adjusted as necessary to span all planned quantities.

What Reassignment Does Not Do

Reassignment only moves the planned quantities either from one unit to another or from one unit to a different account. It does not change how those planned unit quantities are scheduled. If you also need to change how the planned quantities are distributed across calendar periods, you can do that on the Units tab of the Plan form in the Projects hub after you reassign them.
