Shift Dates on a Gantt Chart

If you have project modification rights, you can shift dates for WBS elements by moving Gantt bars on the Gantt chart.

This option is available only if the Resource Planning module is activated.

To shift dates on the Gantt chart:

  1. In the Navigation pane, select Hubs > Projects > Plan.
  2. On the Schedule tab of the Plan form, select the project for which you want to view the Gantt chart.
You can also change plan dates or assignment dates on the Labor tab of the Plan form.
  3. Expand the structure to display the plan rows for which you want to shift dates or click Expand/Collapse All to show all levels of the structure.
  4. Turn on Show Critical Path if you want to see which WBS levels cannot be delayed with affecting the completion date of the project.
The WBS expands to also show all those levels on the critical path in addition to what was already expanded. Items that are on the critical path display as red bars.
  5. On the Actions bar, click Check Out.
If someone else checks in the plan while you are moving the Gantt bars, you are notified that the plan has been checked in and your changes will not take effect.
  6. Move the cursor over the Gantt bar that you want to shift until the open hand cursor displays.
  7. Left-click the Gantt bar, drag the bar right or left on the chart, and release the mouse button.

As you drag the bar, updated Plan Start and Plan End dates display on the left grid and all planning grids for the project. If the selected element impacts any parent or child levels, those dates also shift. The Duration value stays the same. When you release the mouse button, a completion message displays at the top of the page.

If the selected element has any dependencies, those dates also shift to reflect the new plan dates that are enforced through the dependency. For example:
    • Task A has a Finish-to-Start (FS) relationship with Task B. Task A also has a Finish-to-Finish (FF) relationship with Task C. If you move Task A out 4 days later, then Task B shifts to start 4 days later and Task C shifts to end 4 days later.

If Show Critical Path is turned on, as you drag bars on the Gantt chart, any elements that cannot slip any further without impacting the end date will turn red and become part of the critical path. If you move or resize Gantt bars that cause hidden WBS levels to be on the critical path, Vantagepoint does not automatically show them. Toggle Show Critical Path off and on to make them reappear.
