When adding resources to projects, you must make sure that the plan is checked out to you and that the row is eligible to have assignments.

Alternative: If you need to assign multiple resources to work on the same project, select the checkbox for each of those resources in the Resource View grid and click + Add Assignments on the Resource View toolbar.

In addition to resources that you assign using the planning grids, employees with no planned hours but with JTD hours charged to a plan work breakdown structure (WBS) element are assigned automatically and display in the grids as well.

To assign work on a project to one resource:

  1. In the Navigation pane, select Resource Management > Resource View.
  2. If necessary, use a search to display, in the grid on the Resource View form, the resource to whom you want to assign work.
  3. Hover over the resource row in the grid to display and then click in the Resource/Level column to display the Add Assignments dialog box.
The does not display if the resource is inactive or terminated. You can add assignments only for active resources.
Alternative: If the resource already has at least one assignment for the project, you can expand the plan rows for the project in the Resource View grid, navigate to a lower level of the structure, and then click on a WBS row. On the Add Assignments dialog box, only the branch of the plan structure that you selected displays, making it easier to locate the element for which you want to make the assignment.
  4. Use the search field to search for and select the project for which you want to assign work to the resource.
When you select a project, the plan is automatically checked out to you. However, if a plan is currently checked out to someone else, you cannot select it. In that case, appears next to the plan in the list, and the name of the person who has it checked out displays below it.
  5. Expand the plan structure to display the WBS element for which you want to assign work to the resource.
You can add new assignments under both active and inactive WBS elements, but you can make assignments only at the lowest level of each branch of the plan structure. A checkbox displays next to the WBS elements for which you can add an assignment.
  6. Select the Add checkbox for the WBS element.
Other fields then become available in the row.
  7. In Assignment Start and Assignment End, click and use the calendar to select the start and end dates of the resource assignment.
  8. In ETC Hours, enter the planned hours for the assignment.
If you are not ready to enter planned hours, leave this field blank. You can enter hours in the Resource View grid later.
  9. If you consider the planned hours hard booked, select the Hard Book checkbox.
This checkbox is available only if Vantagepoint is configured to use soft and hard booking and you have the required security access to hard book assignments.
  10. To assign the resource to other WBS elements for the selected project, repeat steps 5 - 9.
  11. To add all of the new assignments to the plan, click Add.
