Contents of the New Phase Form

Use the fields and options on the form to add one or more phases to a project.

The New Phase form is available only when you are viewing the project at the project level or phase level of the work breakdown structure (WBS).

Field Description
Create Phase In the drop-down, select the method you want to use to create the phase:
  • Manually: Select this option to create a single phase for which you enter all information manually.
  • From Project: Select this option add one or more phases by selecting from a list of phases assigned to another project. In this work flow, after the New Phase form, you select phases using the Choose Project Structure form. The phase numbers, names, and long names default to the values in the existing phases of the copied project, with one exception. If the phase number already exists in the project to which the new phase is being added, you must provide a different phase number before saving.
  • From Project Template: Select this option add one or more phases by selecting from a list of phases assigned to a project template. In this work flow, after the New Phase form, you select phases using the Choose Project Structure form. The phase numbers, names, and long names default to the values in the existing phases of the copied template, with one exception. If the phase number already exists in the project to which the new phase is being added, you must provide a different phase number before saving.
Phase Number This field is only available if you select Manually in the Create Phase field. Enter a number for the phase.
Name This field is only available if you select Manually in the Create Phase field. Enter a name for the phase.
Long Name This field is only available if you select Manually in the Create Phase field. It defaults to the entry in Name, but you can enter a longer, more descriptive name for the phase.
Project This field is only available if you select From Project in the Create Phase field. Select the project from which you want to select one or more phases to add to the project you are modifying.
Project Template This field is only available if you select From Project Template in the Create Phase field. Select the project template from which you want to select one or more phases to add to the project you are modifying.
Continue Click Continue to move to the next step in adding a new phase or phases to the WBS. The work flow after this dialog depends on which method you selected to create the phase:
  • From Project: The next step in the work flow is the Choose Project Structure form, followed by the Edit Project Structure form. The field values for phases in these dialogs default to the field values in the copied phases.
  • From Project Template: The next step in the work flow is the Choose Project Structure form, followed by the Edit Project Structure form. The field values for phases default to the field values in the copied phases.
  • Manually: As the next step in the work flow, the new phase is displayed in Edit mode. In some cases (estimated completion date, for example), you can change the default values for the phase. In others the project values are displayed but can only be changed at the project level.
