Select Chart Settings

For some reports, you can use the Chart tab to add a chart to a report and select formatting options for the chart.

The legend provides a color key to all items on the chart. Regardless of the number of chart items and the height of the legend, all of the chart items are displayed. That can result in an unreadable legend because the items overlap. To correct that situation, change the record selection criteria for the report to reduce the number of groups on the chart, increase the height that you specify for the chart, or specify a smaller font size for the chart.

The Chart tab for the Resource Utilization by Organization Report contains options not available for other reports.

Prerequisites: If you want to include a user-defined field on a graph, select the Total option for the user-defined field when you set it up in the Screen Designer. If you do not do this, Vantagepoint cannot set the scale appropriately for the graph.

To select settings for the chart options:

  1. Click the Chart tab on the report.
  2. On the Chart Type section, click a chart type radio button to select one of the following chart types:
    • Column Chart: Choose this type to render data as vertical columns.
    • Bar Chart: Choose this type to render data as horizontal bars.

If you select Column Charts or Bar Charts, then for each group that you specify on the Y axis, you can specify up to three columns or series for the X axis. For example, you can set up a bar chart that groups by project and displays cost amount, billing amount, and budget amount for each project.

    • Pie Chart: Choose this type to render data as proportional slices within a circle.
    • Pie Chart Exploded: Choose this type to add space between the slices in the pie chart.
    • Doughnut Chart: Choose this type to render data as proportional sections within a doughnut chart. Each data series that you plot in a doughnut chart adds a ring to the chart. The first data series is displayed in the center of the chart.
    • Doughnut Chart Exploded: Choose this type to add space between the sections of a doughnut chart.
  3. If you want the chart to appear as if it has three dimensions, drag the Make Chart 3D toggle to the on position (). Or, drag the toggle to the off position () to render the chart as a two dimensional model.
  4. On the Chart Options section, set up the label, coordinates, dimensions, and other chart properties in the following fields:
    • Chart Title: Enter a title for the chart.
    • Chart Labels: Select the appropriate label (for example, Label, Amount, Percent, or a combination of these). The choices vary depending on the chart type.
    • X Axis Title: The default title for the horizontal X axis in this field is based on the first level of grouping on the report. To change the default text, type a new title.
    • Y Axis Title: Enter a label for data listed on the vertical Y axis. This option appears only on column and bar charts.

When you make selections in Display Data, Vantagepoint displays a default title, but you can change it.

    • Slice By: This field appears only if you select a Pie or Doughnut chart. This field displays the first selected item on the Sorting/Grouping tab, and is used to "slice" the data selected in Display Data. For example, if the first sorting/grouping item is Project Type, each slice of the pie or doughnut chart represents a data type for a project.
    • Show: Select the location of the chart.
    • Show Legend: Select the location of the chart legend.
    • Font Size: Specify the font size for the chart.
    • Chart Height: Specify the height of the chart area in inches or millimeters based on which one you selected in the Unit of Measure field on the Layout tab.
    • Chart Width: Specify the width of the chart area in inches or millimeters based on which one you selected in the Unit of Measure field on the Layout tab.
    • Display Lines to Labels: Select this option to display a line that connects each slice (for Pie or Doughnut charts only) to its label.
    • Top and Left Alignment: Specify the top and left margins in inches or millimeters based on which one you selected in the Unit of Measure field on the Layout tab. If you intend to display the chart on your Dashboard, set both margins to 0 (zero).
  5. On the Set Charge Data section, set the data displays in the following:
    • Display Data: Click in this field to select the type of data you want to graph. The data that you select here must also be selected as columns on the Columns and/or Groups tab. The options available vary depending on the grouping.
    • Display Amounts In: Select an option to indicate whether you want to show chart amounts in the actual amount, in thousands, or in millions.
    • Bar/Slice 2: Click in this field to select an additional series for your chart.

Depending on the chart type that you selected, the field name will be either Bar (for bar and column charts) or Slice (for pie and doughnut charts).

    • Bar/Slice 3: Click in this field to select an additional series for your chart.
  6. After you set all chart options, click Save.
