Form Designer: Work with Fields

There are several types of fields on PM Compass tabs, such as input fields and check box fields. These instructions apply to all types unless otherwise noted.

Select Fields

Select Single Fields

To change a field, you need to select it. To select a field, click it or select the field name from the Properties menu list. The names that display in the Properties menu list are actual HTML IDs associated with each element. The Properties pane displays the data for the selected field.  

Select Multiple Fields

You can also select multiple fields. You may want to do this to move or align two or more fields at the same time. When you select multiple fields, <Multiple Selections> displays in the Properties pane. To select more than one field, you can:

  • Click the first field, then hold down CTRL while you click the subsequent field(s).

  • Lasso the fields. To do this, hold down the left mouse key and drag around the fields.

  • Click Select All to select all the fields.

Resize Fields

To resize a field, first select the field. The size of the field displays in pixels in the Properties pane.

  • Resize using field — If you can resize the field, then Resize squares appear around the border of the selected field: left/right (for width), bottom/top (for height), and corners (for both). Drag a square until the field is the desired height or width.

  • Resize using Properties — Enter the new size in the Height and Width fields in the Properties pane. If the Height or Width field is not visible, then you cannot change that aspect of the size.

Notes/Tips

  • You can resize multiple fields at the same time. To do so, select the fields and then enter the appropriate data in the Properties pane. However, if that aspect of one of the fields (for example Width) cannot be changed, PM Compass changes only the fields that it can.

  • You cannot resize check boxes.

Move Fields

You can move a field in one of two ways:

  • Select the field and drag it to the new position.

  • Select the field and enter the numbers of its new location in the Properties pane Position fields. The numbers in these fields represent the number of pixels from the left and top of the tab.

Notes/Tips

  • If you move a field, the data in that field is not affected.

  • You can move all the fields on the tab at the same time. Click Select All and then drag the fields to the new position.

Label Fields

You can change the label for a field. For example, you may want to change the Fax label to Fax Number.

To relabel a field, select the label for the field. The information for that label displays in the Properties pane. Enter the new label in the Caption field or click in the Caption field to access the Caption Editor dialog box. You can enter a maximum of 2000 characters on this dialog box.

Notes/Tips

  • You cannot change labels for command buttons (for example, Add Address, Delete Address).

  • HTML tags (for example <B> or <I>) are not supported.

Add New Field Labels to Tabs

To add a new field label on the tab, click New Label. A Custom Label displays in the upper left corner of the form. Move the new label to the desired location and enter the new name in the Caption field.

The labels you add with the Custom Label feature are not associated with any input field.

Notes/Tips

  • HTML tags (for example <B> or <I>) are not supported

Align Fields

To align a single field, drag the field to the position you require.

To align multiple fields, select more than one field, then use Align Left, Align Right, Align Top, Align Bottom. PM Compass aligns the fields to the last field you selected.

Make Multiple Fields the Same Height/Width

  • To make multiple fields the same width, select more than one field and click .

  • To make multiple fields the same height, select more than one field and click .

PM Compass makes the fields the same width/height as the last field you selected.

Delete Field Labels

Only those field labels that you created in the Designer can be deleted using the Designer. To delete a field label, select it and click Delete.

Notes/Tips

  • You cannot delete standard field labels.

  • You cannot delete the actual input portion of the field using Designer.

About Check Boxes

Check boxes are fields in which you click inside the box to select it, such as .

You can move a check box and change its label.

You can also determine whether you want to position the caption to the left or to right side of the check box. To do this, select the check box field that you want to change, and then select True or False from the Left Align Text field in the Properties pane.

About Drop-Down List Fields

Drop-down List fields are fields in which you can select from a predetermined list. In the Designer, when you resize a drop-down list field; however, it does not affect the width of the opened drop-down list.
