This box displays the following file information for the option that you select in the List Files of Type field:
|
| File Name |
The files that you select in the [Results] box display in this field. Multiple selected files are separated by a semicolon (;). You can also enter the file name of the Open Plan file that you want to access, but you must select its file type in the List Files of Type field for Open Plan to locate the file. |
| List Files of Type |
Select the file type that you want to open. The files display in the [Results] box. |
Open Mode
Select the mode in which you want to open the file.
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Default |
If you are opening a project, Open Plan opens the project and its ancillary files in the mode specified on the Preferences tab of the Project Properties dialog box. This setting overrides the default access mode for the ancillary file as set on its own Properties dialog box. |
| Exclusive |
When you open a multi-user file in Exclusive mode, other users have only read-only access to the file while you are using it. In this mode, changes are not saved to a file until you use either the Save or the Save As command. This means that you can abandon your changes at any time by closing the file without saving the information. |
| Shared |
If you open a file in Shared mode, other users can open the file and make changes while you have it open. In Shared mode, some changes are saved, while others are not. |
| Read-Only |
If you open a file in Read-Only mode, other users can open the file in any mode they select. You cannot use the Save command to save changes. Instead, you must use the Save As command and save the file under a different name. You cannot see changes made by other users. |
Note
When you select a file from the list, Open Plan indicates which modes are available for that file by enabling/disabling the appropriate selections. For instance:
- If you select a program that another user has opened in Exclusive mode, the Exclusive and Shared options are disabled (dimmed), and the Read-Only option is active.
- If you select a file that another user has opened in Shared mode, the Exclusive mode is disabled, and the Shared and Read-Only modes are active.
- If you select a file that another user has opened in Read-Only mode, all three modes are active.
If the file that you want to open is already open by another user, Open Plan enables or disables the four access modes as appropriate depending on the mode in which the file is already open. For example, if the file you want to open is already open by another user in Exclusive mode, Open Plan disables the first three modes and you can select only Read Only.
In some cases, however, it may be impossible for Open Plan to fulfill your request. This can happen if another user has opened the same file that you want between the time it takes you to you display the File Open dialog box and make your selection. Open Plan issues a warning when it cannot fulfill your request. For example, assume you display the File Open dialog box and select a project to open in Exclusive mode. Before you click OK, another user has already selected the same file to open in Exclusive mode and has clicked OK. Because the other user completed the open file action first, the project opens for them, while you receive a warning indicating that you cannot open the file.
You can also select multiple files to open at one time using SHIFT+click or CTRL+click. Open Plan attempts to open the files in the mode you specify. If a file cannot be opened in the specified mode, it will be opened in the highest mode available. For example, assume you select three projects to open in Exclusive mode and one of the projects is already open in Shared mode by another user. Open Plan opens two projects in Exclusive mode and the third in Shared mode because that is the highest mode available for that project.
When you open a project (regardless of the access mode you select), the ancillary files associated with the project are opened in the default access mode established on the Preferences tab of the Project Properties dialog box. If you open an ancillary file outside the context of a project, right-clicking the file and selecting Default on the Open sub-menu opens the ancillary file in the default access mode established on the Properties dialog box for that file.
