Important Changes Coming to Costpoint Web Services in Costpoint 8.1 - Action Required Now

Costpoint 8.1 is currently targeted for release to on-premise clients in September 2021. With the release of Costpoint 8.1 only "Generic" Web Services will be supported. Customers who are currently using non-Generic Web Services should modify their existing non-Generic Web Services to be a Generic web service.

Costpoint Cloud customers are not impacted by this change since only Generic Web Services are supported in the Costpoint Cloud.

Upgrading to Costpoint 8.1

If you have not converted your non-Generic Web Services to Generic prior to upgrading to Costpoint 8.1 your non-Generic Web Services will not be included in the deployment of Costpoint 8.1. The definitions of your non-Generic Web Services will be kept in the Web Integration Console so that you can modify them to Generic and redeploy them. Deltek strongly recommends that you modify your non-Generic Web Services to Generic prior to installing Costpoint 8.1.

How to modify a non-Generic Web Service to a Generic Web Service

To modify your existing Web Service open the module and change the "Generate" setting from "Web Service" to "Generic Web Service" and save the module. Once done, that disables calls using the Regular Web Service for that module.

In the app that is calling the web services, there needs to be changes to the SOAP envelope.

  1. The Web Service URL (aka the WSDL) needs to change to reflect the Generic URL (http://server/webservices/cpwwsgenericmoduleWS?WSDL or https://server/webservices/cpwwsgenericmodulesecWS?WSDL for secure requests).
  2. Changes to the SOAP Envelope to reflect the change to the Generic Web Services.
    • All modules could change to the same generic SOAP Envelope:
      • <soapenv:Envelope xmlns:cpw="http://www.deltek.com/enterprise/integration/ws/cpwwsgenericmodule" xmlns:soapenv="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/">
    • In the <soapenv:Body>, the method name would change from the actual name of the method to one of the methods that handles Generic web service requests:
      • cpwwsgenericexport: Supports data export Web services
      • cpwwsgenericimport: Supports data import Web services
      • cpwwsgenericprocess: Supports process Web services
      • cpwwsgenericreportnoreturn: Supports report Web services that do not return the report
      • cpwwsgenericreporthtmlreturn: Supports report Web services that return report in HTML format
      • cpwwsgenericreportpdfreturn: Supports report Web services that return the report in PDF format
      • cpwwsgenericreportexcelreturn: Supports report Web services that return the report in Excel format
  3. There would be no change to the actual XML.

More information on Generic Web Services can be found in Appendix A of the Integration Console guide found here.

Note: This may also be a good time to change from SOAP to REST if your organization has a preference for using REST API. More information on Costpoint's REST web services can be found here.
