Calendars and Periods

wInsight Analytics displays data in the analytics for all contracts in monthly periods. If a contract calendar has more than one period in a month (weekly periods, for example), wInsight Analytics, during the data load process, consolidates the data for all periods in that month into a single period, and uses the end date of the last period in the month as the end date of the monthly period.

Contract Calendars with Monthly Periods

If a contract has one period each month, wInsight Analytics makes no changes to the period data when it loads it into the analytics data model.

Contract Calendars with More than One Period in a Month

If a contract calendar has more than one period in a month, wInsight Analytics only sets up a single monthly period using the data forthe last period in that month. The end date of the last period in the month is used as the end date of the monthly period.

For example, a contract has these period end dates for September, 2013:

  • 9/7/2013
  • 9/14/2013
  • 9/21/2013
  • 9/28/2013

wInsight Analytics replaces these four periods with a single period for September 2013, with 9/28/2013 as the end date for the period.

For both cumulative and current values for the September period, wInsight Analytics uses the cumulative and current values from wInsight for the last weekly period in the month.

Period Format on Charts and Tables

In wInsight Analytics - Single Project, if the original contract calendar has only one period for each month, the periods are displayed in <month>-<year> format (Jan-14) on charts and tables. If the original calendar was not a monthly calendar, the periods are identified on charts and tables by the end date (1/29/2014) assigned to the monthly period in the wInsight Analytics module.

In wInsight Analytics - Multi-Project, the periods are always displayed in <month>-<year> format (Jan-14) on charts and tables because a data point could represent data from more than one contract and thus have more than one period end date.

Period Selection List

You use the Period selection list on the analytics tabs to specify the period for which you want to do your analysis. Periods are identified in the list by their end dates.

In wInsight Analytics - Single Project, the Period selection list displays the periods for the currently selected contract at the top of the list. If you have other contracts with different calendars (different period end dates for some or all monthly periods), those periods are listed below those for the selected contract.

In wInsight Analytics - Multi-Project, the Period selection list displays all of the monthly periods in descending sequence by end date. If you have two contracts with different ending dates in a given month, the list displays two periods for that month.

Mapping a Period to a Different Month

By default, wInsight Analytics assigns periods to a month based on each period's end date. However, if you have a period that starts in one month and ends in the next, the data for that period could be assigned to the wrong month, distorting the performance data for both months.

For example, if a contract calendar has a period with a 3/02/2013 end date, the data load process, by default, assigns that period to the March monthly period for analysis, but that data probably should be considered February data.

If you have contracts for which this situation exists, you can use the wInsight_Analytics_Setup.xlsx Microsoft Excel® spreadsheet to map those periods to end dates in the correct months. The next time you run the data load process for those periods, the data for the monthly periods in the analytics data model is updated based on the mapping. (The wInsight_Analytics_Setup.xlsx file is located in the <installation location>\setup folder.)
