Biometric Authentication

This feature pertains to legacy terminals. These terminals are no longer supported in Shop Floor Time although they are still available in the application for use by customers upgrading from AutoTime 6 or AutoTime 7.

The Biometric Authentication feature prompts employees to use a fingerprint reader in order to get authenticated and post transactions on a terminal. Biometric authentication can be set via an event, terminal profile, or terminal setting (as described below).

Note: Even though you enforce Biometric Authentication, you can still allow an employee to use a hand-held CCD scanner or keypad instead of the fingerprint reader. For example, a person might not  have sufficient minutiae on their finger for the reader to authenticate the user with 100% accuracy. In such case, you would assign the Biometric Exempt setting to the appropriate person.

Biometric Authentication requires the following configuration:

  1. The login event must be configured to enforce biometric authentication.

  2. The terminal profile must be configured to enforce biometric authentication. You can also configure a specific 9540 or 9520 terminal to enforce biometric authentication, overriding any biometric authentication configuration in the terminal’s terminal profile.

Configure a Terminal Profile to Enforce Biometric Authentication

To enable or disable biometric authentication for a terminal profile:

  1. Click Main Menu > Configuration > Terminal > Terminal Profile.

  2. Select the terminal profile for which you want to enable or disable biometric authentication.

  3. In the Setting Type tab, click Add.

  4. Select the Setting Type BIOMETRIC_ENFORCE.

  5. To enforce biometric authentication for this terminal profile, select Enabled from the Setting Value list. If you do not want to enforce biometric authentication for this terminal profile, select Disabled from the Setting Value list.

  6. Click Save.

  7. Restart the application server.

  8. Restart all affected terminals using this terminal profile.

Configure a Specific Terminal to Enforce Biometric Authentication

A specific terminal (of type 9540 or 9520) can be configured to enforce biometric authentication. This setting will override any biometric authentication configuration in the terminal’s profile. For example, if a terminal is configured to enforce biometric authentication, but its terminal profile is not, employees will still be required to use a fingerprint reader.

To enable or disable biometric authentication for a specific terminal:

  1. Click Main Menu > Configuration > Terminal > Terminal.

  2. Select the 9540 or 9520 terminal for which you want to enable or disable biometric authentication.

  3. Navigate to the Terminal Setting tab on the bottom half of the form.

  4. If the Setting Type named BIOMETRIC_ENFORCE is not listed in the grid, click Add and select BIOMETRIC_ENFORCE. Continue to step 5.

  5. If the Setting Type named BIOMETRIC_ENFORCE is listed in the grid, select the row and click Modify. Continue to step 5.

  6. To enforce biometric authentication for this terminal, select Enabled from the Setting Value list. If you do not want to enforce biometric authentication for this terminal, select Disabled from the Setting Value list.

  7. Click Save.

  8. Restart the application server.

  9. Restart the terminal.
