Export a File to Microsoft Project

You can export project plans from Vision to Microsoft Project.

Prerequisite: Before you begin the export process, Configure Internet Explorer Security Options.

To export a Vision project plan into Microsoft Project, complete the following steps:

  1. From the Vision Navigation menu, click Planning > Project Planning.
  2. On the General tab, select the project plan that you want to export.
  3. Click Actions > Export to MS Project.
  4. On the Export Plan dialog box, select one of the following options:
    Option Description
Baseline Hours and Labor Costs Select this option to export the Vision project plan's baseline hours and labor costs.
Planned Hours Select this option to export the Vision project plan's planned hours. When both Planned Hours and Actual Hours are exported, Microsoft Project attempts to adjust the Planned Hours to match the Actual Hours. Therefore, the data in Microsoft Project might differ from the data in Vision.
Actual Hours Select this option to export the Vision project plan's actual hours.
There are differences between how data is managed between Vision and Microsoft Project. This is based on actual and planned hours, start and finish dates, WBS levels, and assigned resources. It is important that you review the warnings that display on the Export Plan dialog box before you complete the export process:
    • When Actual Hours are exported with Planned Hours, Microsoft Project will attempt to adjust the planned hours to match the actual hours.
    • Microsoft Project will collapse Start/Finish dates to match Planned Hours.
    • When Planned Hours have been assigned to a WBS element and no resources are assigned, Microsoft Project will use the Start date and Duration to set the Finish date. Planned Hours will be spread evenly across that time frame.
  5. Click OK to export the data.

The exported file (with an .mpp extension) is saved to the default location set in Microsoft Project > Tools > Options, Save.
