Visualization Window Sliders

Vision provides two sliders that you can use to manipulate your visualization maps in the Visualization window. One slider is linked to the size metric, and the other slider is linked to the color metric.

To display the sliders for a visualization map, select Show slider and load setting controls check box on the General tab of the Options dialog box and then generate the map.

Size Slider

Use the size slider to do the following:

  • Filter out blocks with low or high metric values.

  • Review the distribution of block metric values on the scale of values

1

Data scale — This area displays a scale for the current size metric values in the top half of the slider and a histogram in the lower half. Together, the two halves indicate the distribution of metric values. When you position the mouse pointer on a block, a black circle marks the location of that block’s metric value in the slider range.

2

Histogram stacks — The lower half of the slider contains a histogram of the size metric values. The height of a stack indicates the number of items that have a metric value at that location on the scale.

3

Outlier areas — At each end of the size slider is an outlier area. If the map includes metric values that fall below or above the current range of values, a histogram stack is displayed in the corresponding outlier area. In the illustration above, the high value outlier area contains a histogram stack.

4

Filter handles — Use the filter handles to filter out high and low metric values. To filter out lower metric values, drag the left filter handle to the right. To filter out higher metric values, drag the right filter handle to the left. When you release the mouse button, Vision removes from the map any blocks with values that now fall outside the range defined by the filter handles. In the illustration above, blocks with metric values in the gray area of the slider have been filtered out and are not displayed in the map. When the filter handle is at the end of the slider, as the left filter handle is in the illustration above, no blocks are being filtered out at that end of the scale.

Color Slider

Use the color slider to do the following:

  • Filter out blocks with low or high metric values.

  • Review the distribution of block metric values on the scale of values.

  • Change the high, low, and center colors.

  • Adjust the color gradient range.

1

Color scale — This area of the slider displays the color gradient from low metric values to high metric values. The color area also contains a histogram of the metric values. The scale in the upper part of the slider (the data area) serves as a legend that links colors to metric values. In combination with the histogram, it shows the distribution of metric values. When you position the mouse pointer on a block, a black circle in the color area marks the location of that block’s metric value in the slider range.

2

Data scale — This area displays a scale for the current color metric values. The scale serves as a legend that links colors to metric values. In combination with the histogram in the color area, it shows the distribution of metric values.

3

Histogram stacks — The color area of the slider contains a histogram of the color metric values. The height of a stack indicates the number of items that have a metric value at that location on the scale.

4

Color markers — The color slider has three color markers: one for the low color, one for the center color, and one for the high color. To change the color gradient by changing the range of values over which colors are shaded, use the mouse to drag the color marker to the left or right. To change the color associated with a marker, right-click the marker and select the new color.

5

Outlier areas — At each end of the color slider is an outlier area. If the map includes metric values that fall below or above the current range of values, a histogram stack is displayed in the corresponding outlier area. To change the color of the outlier area, right-click the colored square above the area and select the new color.

6

Filter handles — Use the filter handles to filter out high and low metric values. To filter out lower metric values, drag the left filter handle to the right. To filter out higher metric values, drag the right filter handle to the left. When you release the mouse button, Vision removes from the map any blocks with values that now fall outside the range defined by the filter handles. In the illustration above, blocks with metric values in the gray area of the slider have been filtered out and are not displayed in the map. When the filter handle is at the end of the slider, as the left filter handle is in the illustration above, no blocks are being filtered out at that end of the scale.
