Project Planning Visualization Metrics Tab

Use the Metrics tab to select the metrics for a visualization map and to specify the attributes of those metrics.

Grid Options and Columns

Field Description
Drop-down list in the upper left corner of the grid

The Vision grids contain a drop-down list that displays a combination of the following options:

  • Print grid information

  • Export grid data to Excel

  • Enable Grouping

Not all options are available on all grids.

Move to top Click the Move to top grid option to move all selected metrics (rows with Size By, Color By, or Tool Tip selected) to the top of the list. (The current order of the remaining rows does not change.)
Find Click the Find grid option to search the Metric Name column for text that you specify.
Find Next If you use the Find option and the first instance of the search text is not the one you want, click the Find next grid option to find the next instance.
Edit calculation To modify an existing calculated field, click in the row for that field, and then click the Edit calculation grid option.
New Calculation Click the New calculation grid option to add a calculated field of your own design to the visualization.
Row selection column When you click in a row in the grid, the first column of the grid displays next to it to mark the currently selected metric.
Size By

Select the Size By check box for any metrics that you want to represent with block size on the visualization map.

The drop-down list for the Size field in the Visualization window includes each metric for which you select this check box.

Negative Values

If you select a metric in Size in the Visualization window and the value of that metric for a block is zero or a negative value, Vision cannot display that block. If a metric could have zero or negative values, we strongly recommend that you instead use color to represent that metric.

Color By

Select the Color By check box for any metrics that you want to represent with color on the visualization map.

The drop-down list for the Color field in the Visualization window includes each metric for which you select this check box.

Tool Tip Select the Tool Tip check box for any metrics for which you want Vision to display the metric value in a tooltip when you position the mouse pointer on a block.
Metric Name This grid column displays the names of the metrics that are available for the visualization map.
Label Enter the label you want Vision to display for the metric in the drop-down lists for the Color field and the Size field in the Visualization window.
Low Color

Select the color that Vision uses to represent values at the low end of the range for the metric.

For example, if you select red in Low Color for the Planned Revenue metric, then intensely red blocks on the visualization map indicate projects with low planned revenue amounts.

This option is only available if you select Color By for the metric.

High Color

Select the color that Vision uses to represent values at the high end of the range for the metric.

For example, if you select blue in Low Color for the Planned Revenue metric, then intensely blue blocks on the visualization map indicate projects with high planned revenue amounts.

This option is only available if you select Color By for the metric.

Color Shading

Vision uses your selection in Color Shading to determine the metric value that marks the central point in the range of colors. By default, blocks with a metric value equal to that center value are white. Blocks with higher values are displayed in lighter or darker shades of the high color, and blocks with lower values are displayed in lighter or darker shades of the low color.

Select one of the following:

  • Average — Vision determines the center value based on an average of the values for the metric: Sum of the metric values / Number of values.

  • Manual — You enter, in the associated High Color Value and Low Color Value fields, specific metric values at which Vision displays the pure high and low colors. Vision then sets the metric value that marks the central point in the range of colors at the average of these two values. You might want to select Manual if you first selected Average, and colors in the visualization were so similar that it was difficult to distinguish the differences in metric value. If you narrow the range over which the colors are shaded, color differences are more pronounced.

  • Zero Center — Zero is the center value. Vision displays blocks in the pure center color (white, by default) if the metric equals zero. Blocks with negative metric values are varying combinations of the center color and low color, and blocks with positive values are varying combinations of the center color and high color. This option is often the best choice for a metric that commonly has both positive and negative values.

This option is only available if you select Color By for the metric.

High Color Value If you select Manual in Color Shading, enter the metric value that you want Vision to display with the pure (unshaded) high color. Metric values that are greater than this value are also displayed with the pure high color.
Low Color Value If you select Manual in Color Shading, enter the metric value that you want Vision to display with the pure (unshaded) low color. Metric values that are less than this value are also displayed with the pure low color.
Format

Format displays the format in which the visualization map displays the metric values.

To change the format, click in Format to open the Format dialog box.

Type

This column displays the type of metric:

  • Standard — Standard Vision metric.

  • User Defined — User-defined metric.

  • Calculated — Calculated metric.

Metrics

The metrics available on this tab depend on the following:

  • The settings in Planning Configuration.

  • Whether or not Full Access is selected in Labor Cost Rates/Amounts on the Accounting tab of the Roles form for your security role in Security Configuration.
