Dependencies Dialog Box

Use the Dependencies dialog box to view the dependent predecessor or successor tasks for the current row on the Labor grid. This information is useful when you build task dependencies or before you change dates for one or more task rows.

You cannot edit the fields on the Dependencies dialog box. Use the Schedule tab of the Project Planning form to change the relationships between tasks.

Location

To display the dialog box, complete the following steps:

  1. From the Vision Navigation menu, select Planning > Project Planning.
  2. Click the Labor tab of the Project Planning form.
  3. Select a grid row where there is a dependency established for the selected task, as indicated by in the Dependency column.
  4. Right-click and select the Dependencies option on the shortcut menu.

Field Description
Task Name This field displays the name of the selected task on the Labor grid.

Predecessor Grid

Use the Predecessor grid to view the defined predecessor tasks.

Field Description
Predecessor Grid Drop-down

Click the drop-down arrow on a grid header to complete any of the following actions:

  • To print grid data, click Print. On the Print Preview form, click File > Print to send the grid data to your default printer.
  • To export grid data to an Excel spreadsheet, click Export to Excel. When Microsoft Excel opens, use its features to modify, print, or email the grid data, or to save the spreadsheet file locally.
  • To turn on grouping for a grid, click Enable Grouping. When a field displays with the instruction: "Drag a column header here to group by that column," drag and drop column headers into the field, in the sequence that you want them to display.

Not all options are available on all grids.

Predecessor This field displays the predecessor to the selected task.
Dependency Type This field displays the relationship between the tasks. The defined relationship determines how the tasks are linked together:
  • Finish to Start — The successor task cannot begin until the predecessor task is complete. This is the most common relationship used when planning projects. You can also use the right-click shortcut menu to select Set FS Relationship to build this type of relationship between two or more tasks.
  • Start to Start — The successor task cannot begin until the predecessor task begins. You can also use the right-click shortcut menu to select Set SS Relationship to build this type of relationship between two or more tasks.
  • Finish to Finish — The successor task cannot be completed until the predecessor task is completed. You can also use the right-click shortcut menu to select Set FF Relationship to build this type of relationship between two or more tasks.
  • Start to Finish — The successor task cannot be completed until the predecessor task has begun. You can also use the right-click shortcut menu to select Set SF Relationship to build this type of relationship between two or more tasks.
Current Row (Successor) This field displays the name of the selected task.
Lag/(Lead) This field displays the lag or lead time for the task.

You set the lag time or lead time in days.

  • Lag time — Indicates a delay between the dependent tasks where the selected relationship occurs a specified number of days later. After you enter the number of days of lag time, you select After as the Direction and then Vision creates the dependency. For example, if the Relationship is Finish to Start, you can specify a lag time of five days such that the dependent task does not start until five days after the predecessor task is finished.
  • Lead time — Indicates that the selected relationship occurs a specified number of days earlier, which may result in the tasks overlapping. After you enter the number of days of lead, you select Before as the Direction and then Vision creates the dependency. For example, if the Relationship is Start to Start, you can specify a lead time of five days and select Before as the direction. This causes the dependent task to start five days before the predecessor task starts.

The lag time value displays as a positive (5d) and the lead time value displays as a negative (-5d) on this dialog box.

Scale This field displays Day, which is the default scale that is defined for the lag or lead time. You cannot change the scale setting.

Successors Grid

Use the Successors grid to view the successor tasks and their relationships.
