Enter Phone Numbers
Because phone number formats vary from country to country, you can specify a format each time you enter a phone number. Every phone number field has a default format. For a blank field, that is the default format specified for your company. For a field that already contains a phone number, that is the format selected for that phone number.
To enter a phone number:
-
In the phone number field, enter the phone number.
If you are going to apply either the default format or another defined format, you can type the digits without any special characters such as parentheses. If you do not want to apply a defined format and DPS is configured to allow that, enter the number in the format that you want.
You can also include an extension number after the phone number without affecting its format. For example, you could add extension 115 by entering the number at the end of the phone number(5552231122115) or by entering it with a space and label (5552231122 Ext 115). The phone number portion of your entry will still be formatted correctly, with the extension following.
-
Do one of the following:
- To apply the current default phone number format for the field, tab or click out of the field.
- To select a phone number format, click in the phone number field.
- To leave the phone number as you typed it, click in the phone number field and select Do not format. (If that option is not available, you must select one of the defined formats.)
Your entry is reformatted (or not) based on your selection.
For example, if you entered 5552231122 and selected the (###) ###-#### format, your entry is reformatted as (555) 223-1122. You can also change the format of a previously formatted phone number by selecting a different format.
An alternative to the procedure above is to first select the format you want (or select the Do not format option) and then type the phone number. When you leave the field, your entry is reformatted (or not) based on your selection.
