Create a Project from an Opportunity
Use the New Project form to create a new project from an opportunity.
The CRM or Resource Planning applications must be installed in order for you to be able to create a
project from an
opportunity.
In an environment with multiple currencies, when you create a project from an opportunity, the default currency values are as follows:
- Project Currency defaults to the opportunity's currency (If using Service Estimates, this is the same as the Cost Currency of the Service Estimate).
- Billing Currency defaults to the opportunity's currency (If using Service Estimates, this is the same as the Billing Currency of the Service Estimate).
To create a project from an opportunity:
- In the Navigation pane, select .
- Click + New Project in the top right corner of the form. DPS displays the New Project form.
- In the Create Project drop-down list, select From Opportunity. DPS activates the Find an Opportunity field and displays the Copy Plan Structure and Move Assignments check box.
- In Find an Opportunity, enter the name of the opportunity. As you type, DPS displays all matching opportunities you have security rights to see.
- Select the Copy Plan Structure and Move Assignments check box if you want to create the project's WBS structure from the opportunity's plan structure and use the opportunity plan as the starting point for the project plan. Opportunities have no structure, so the WBS structure of the new project comes from the plan. If the plan has only one level, DPS copies the entire plan and settings. If the plan has more than one level, DPS copies the levels originally specified in the Edit Project Structure grid. If you do not elect to copy the opportunity plan, DPS creates an empty plan for the project using default settings, so you can immediately begin entering planned labor hours and planned expense and consultant amounts.
- In Plan Start, select the start date from the calendar. If the Plan Start is different from the date specified in the plan, DPS shifts all moved assignments to the new Plan Start date. The plan start date defaults to the opportunity plan start date.
- Enter a unique number in Project Number and a unique name in Name.
- To include a longer, more descriptive name for the project, enter it in Long Name.
- Select Regular, Overhead, or Promotional from the Charge Type drop-down list.
-
Click
Continue.
- If the opportunity you select does not have an opportunity plan, or it has a plan, but the plan does not have phases and tasks, DPS completes this work flow by creating the project and displaying it in Edit All mode, where you can adjust the copied data on each of the project tabs. When you have finished entering data on each of the project tabs, click Save to create the project.
- If theopportunity you select has an opportunity plan with phases or tasks, DPS displays the Choose Project Structure form, moving assignments and associated hours/amounts only for the WBS levels that are kept and saved in the form. Continue with the next step.
- In the Choose Project Structure form, by default the check boxes for all phases and tasks are selected. Deselect the check boxes for the phases and tasks you do not want to copy. Deselecting a phase deselects that phase's associated tasks.
- Click Continue. DPS displays the Edit Project Structure form.
-
Make any desired changes in the Edit
Project Structure form:
- You can change the values for any of the phases and tasks fields in the grid. For example, you might want to change the status from Dormant to Active.
- You can also make changes to the project structure. To copy, delete, or add a new WBS element under a row, hover over the row, click , and select the option from the drop-down list.
- Click Save.
Note that for all projects created in the browser application, the Approved for use in processing option is not selected. If that option should be selected for a project, an Accounting user must display that project in the desktop application and select it there.
