Reschedule Assignments or Plans in Resource Management

To change plan dates or assignment dates for plan rows that have planned hours, use the Reschedule dialog box to enter the new dates and to indicate how you want the schedule change to affect the distribution of planned hours and amounts. To change plan dates for plan rows with no planned hours, you can also simply change the dates in the Project View grid.

You can also change assignment dates on the Labor tab in the Projects hub, and you can change plan dates on the Labor tab, Expenses tab, or Consultants tab in that hub.

After you complete the rescheduling process, you can, if necessary, make changes to individual hours distributions in the Resource View grid or Project View grid or on the Labor tab of the Projects form to get them exactly the way you want them.

To reschedule assignments or plans in Resource Management:

  1. To change assignment dates, go to the Resource Management section in the Navigation pane, and click either Resource View or Project View.

To change plan dates, click Project View.

  2. In the grid, display the plan row for which you want to change plan dates or assignment dates.
  3. Do one of the following to display the Reschedule dialog box:
    • On the plan row, change one of the dates you want to change, and tab or click out of the field.
    • Hover over or click the plan row, click at the end of the row, and click Reschedule.
  4. In the Reschedule dialog box, do one of the following:
    • To keep the same number of working days between the start and end date and keep the same distribution of planned hours, select Shift.
    • To lengthen or shorten the plan date range or assignment date range, select Change Duration.
  5. If you selected Change Duration, do one of the following:
    • If you are rescheduling assignment dates and want to redistribute the planned hours and amounts evenly over the new date range, select Distribute Labor Hours and Amounts Evenly.

To keep the current distribution of planned hours and amounts, select Don't Redistribute Labor Hours and Amounts.

    • If you are rescheduling plan dates and want to redistribute the planned labor hours evenly for any assignments for the WBS element for which the assignment dates must change to fall within the new plan date range, select Redistribute Hours Evenly on Changed Assignments. By default, if an assignment for the WBS element has a resource assignment with a start date that either matches the original plan start date or is earlier than the new plan start date, that assignment date is adjusted to match the plan start date. Likewise, if an assignment has an end date that either matches the original plan end date or is later than the new plan end date, that assignment date is adjusted to match the plan end date. However, if you also select Replace All Child Dates with New Parent Dates, the plan dates or assignment dates for all the child rows are adjusted to match the new plan dates. Only assignment rows for which the assignment dates are changed have their hours redistributed.

To keep the current distribution of planned hours and amounts, select Don't Redistribute.

  6. If you clicked in the planning grid to display this dialog box and you selected the Shift option, you can change one or both of the dates in the From This Assignment/Plan Date Range fields if you only want to shift a part of the current date range. If you do not change these dates, the entire date range is shifted.
  7. In the To This Assignment/Plan Date Range fields, enter or select the new assignment or plan date range for the plan row.

If you selected the Shift option, select either a new start date or a new end date, and DPS determines the other date needed to keep the same number of working days in the range.

If you selected the Change Duration option, select both the start date and end date for the range.

  8. If you are rescheduling plan dates and selected the Change Duration option, and you want to change the plan dates or assignment dates for all the child rows to match the new plan dates for the parent row, select Replace All Child Dates with New Parent Dates.
  9. To complete the rescheduling process, click Reschedule. When the process finishes, a completion message displays at the top of the page.
After verifying the validity of all changes, DPS does the following:
    • Changes the affected plan dates or assignment dates.
    • Redistributes planned hours and amounts. Note that if hours are moved to a date range in which the resource already has planned hours, the rescheduled hours are distributed proportionally across that date range based on the distribution of the preexisting planned hours.
    • Updates values displayed in all planning grids to reflect the new schedule.
