Reassign Work on a Project to Another Resource in Project View
If you assign work on a project to an employee or generic resource and later want to transfer all or part of the assignment hours to another resource (for example, from a generic resource to a new employee you have just hired for the project), you can reassign them from Project View.
Reassignment only moves the planned hours for an assignment from one resource to another. It does not change how those planned hours are scheduled. If you also need to change how the planned hours are distributed across calendar periods, you can do that in Resource View, in Project View, or on the Labor tab of the Projects form after you reassign them.
Alternative: You can also reassign work from Resource View or from the Labor tab of the Projects form.
To reassign all or part of a resource's work assignment in Project View:
- In the Navigation pane, go to the Resource Management section and click Project View.
- Use a search to display, in the grid, the project that contains the assignment that you want to reassign.
- Expand the work breakdown structure (WBS) levels to display the assignment row at the resource level.
- Hover over that row and click at the end of the row.
- Click Reassign.
-
On the Reassign dialog box, click
Period to Reassign and select one of these options:
- Entire assignment period: Select this option to reassign planned hours for entire assignment date range.
- Part of the assignment period: Select this option reassign the planned hours for only a portion of the assignment date range.
-
If you are reassigning planned hours for only part of the assignment period, enter or select the start date and end date for the reassignment in the two
Period fields.
If you are reassigning planned hours for the entire assignment period, these fields display the assignment date range, and you cannot change the start and end dates.
-
To reassign only part of the currently assigned hours, do either of the following:
- To reassign less than 100 percent of the planned hours for the reassignment period, enter that percentage in % to Reassign. The number of hours displayed in Hours to Reassign is updated based on your entry.
- To reassign fewer than the total number of planned hours for the reassignment period, enter that number. The percentage displayed in % to Reassign is updated based on your entry.
-
By default, the Reassign To grid displays all active
employees and generic resources. To restrict the resources displayed in the grid to make it easier to locate the resource to which you are reassigning the assignment, do either or both of the following:
- In the first Search field, select a standard search or a saved custom search.
- In the second Search field, enter one or more search characters to further restrict the list. DPS displays a list of resources for which at least one of the following starts with those search characters: employee preferred name, employee first name, employee last name, employee name suffix, employee ID, generic resource name, labor category.
- Click the grid row for the resource to which you want to reassign the assignment planned hours.
-
If you consider the reassignment hard booked, select the
Hard Book check box.
This check box is only available if DPS is configured to use soft and hard booking and if you have the required security access to hard book assignments.
-
To complete the reassignment, click
Reassign. When the reassignment finishes, a completion message displays at the top of the page.
DPS does the following:
- Reassigns the planned hours to the resource you selected, either by adding a new assignment or by merging the new assignment with an existing one for that resource.
- Deletes the original assignment if all hours were reassigned, or adjusts the planned hours for the original assignment if you only reassigned a portion of the original hours. (The original assignment is not deleted if actual job-to-date (JTD) hours exist for that assignment, or if that assignment was saved as part of the plan baseline.)
- Updates values displayed in all planning grids to reflect the reassignment.
