Profit or Gross Profit with Baseline or Forecast Comparison Chart

This line chart compares the profit amounts for fiscal periods for the organizations, project types, project managers, or customers that you select, in either a line chart or Mekko chart format.

In the line chart, actual profit amounts for the current period display as solid lines, and budget or forecast amounts for future periods display as dashed lines.

The default view for this chart is your entry-level organization. You can include any number of organizations in the comparison. You can also select from other attributes, including the Project Type, Project Manager, and Customer. Each attribute displays as its own line or set of colored bar segments on the chart, and the chart updates when you add and remove attributes to compare.

Chart Format

The default chart is a line chart, but you can use the Fast Change icon () in the chart title bar to display a Mekko chart.

Chart Item

Description

Horizontal axis: timeframe

The horizontal axis displays the month-year of the trend line that you hover over (as displayed along the x-axis of the chart).

Use to change the timeframe for which you analyze profit amounts.

Vertical axis (line chart): current value

For the line chart, the vertical axis displays the range of profit amounts.

Vertical axis (Mekko chart): decimal parts of the total profit

For the Mekko chart, the vertical axis divides the scale from 0.00 to 1.00 (100 percent of total profit) into equal segments.

Chart lines: profit amount by organization, project type, project manager, or customer

Each colored chart line represents profit contributed, over the analysis period, by an attribute. Actual profit amounts display as solid lines, and budget or forecast profit amounts for future periods display as dashed lines.

Use the Cycle button () next to the legend to break down profit by organization, project type, project manager, or customer.

Mekko bars: percentage contributions of profit by organization, project type, project manager, or customer

Each Mekko bar represents 100 percent of profit for that period, quarter, or year. Thus, all bars are the same height. The relative width of the bars indicates how a period's total profit compares to the total profit for other periods on the chart.

Each segment in a Mekko bar represents the percentage of the total profit for the period contributed by that attribute (a project type, for example).

Use the Cycle button () next to the legend to break down profit by organization, project type, project manager, or customer.

Chart Data

The following data displays on this chart:

Chart Item

Description

Actual profit or gross Profit

Actual profit or gross profit amounts for past and current fiscal periods for the organizations, project types, project managers, or customers that you select.

Actual profit amounts display as solid lines.

Baseline budget or forecast profit

Baseline budget or forecast profit or gross profit amounts for future fiscal periods for the organizations, project types, project managers, or customers that you select.

Baseline budget and forecast amounts display as dashed lines.

Mekko chart only: percentage contributions to profit or gross profit

For descriptions of the sources of the data on this chart, see Data Sources.

Amount or Margin

You can display profit or gross profit as either amounts or as margin percentages.

To indicate which you want, select Amount or Margin in the upper-left corner of the Profit tab:

.

The selected option turns green, and the pertinent information on the charts and tables updates to reflect your selection.

Period or Year-to-Date

There are two ways to view profit: Period and Year-To-Date (YTD). The type of chart impacts the data that displays on the charts.

Period is data for the current analysis period, while YTD provides a cumulative, rolling perspective within a given year. For example, February = January + February, March =  January + February + March, and so on.

Profit defaults to YTD when used initially, but you can switch the chart type at any time.

To switch the type of chart...

  1. Locate the chart type options.

  2. Click Period or YTD. The selected option's button turns green, and the pertinent information on the charts and tables updates to reflect your selection.

User Options That Affect the Chart

The following options on the User Options tab affect this chart:

For descriptions of how each option affects Profit Analytics, see User Options That Affect Profit.

Change the Analyzed Attribute

By default, this chart displays the profit amounts by top-level organization, but you have the option to display the data by any of the following:

To change the view, do either of the following:

Change the Time Period

After you select the view, you can select the associated time period. Use   below the grid to select the length of time — Period, Quarter, or Year — for which you want to view the data.

If you apply filters before you change the view, the chart only displays data for items that satisfy those filters. For example, if you select two filters and then use to display by manager, the table only displays the manager for those employee attributes.

If the time period extends beyond the current period, the chart displays projections by including Baseline or Forecast data as a dotted line. This depends on the Budget Type option selected on the User Options tab.

Maximize the Chart

Click at the top right of the chart to display the chart at its maximum size. Click to restore the chart to its original size and location on the tab.

Focus the Chart

To focus the chart on a particular set of data points, click and drag the mouse pointer over the chart so that all of those data points are included in the green selection area.

To focus the chart on one or a few attributes, do either of the following:

To focus the chart on a more restricted analysis period, do either of the following:

It is much easier to make selections on the chart itself if you first maximize the chart.

Display Data Point Information

To see the profit amount for a specific combination of time period and attribute, position the mouse pointer over that line chart data point or that segment in the Mekko bar. When you do, Costpoint Analytics displays the profit amount in a data box, along with the period, quarter, or year, and the attribute description.

It is much easier to position the mouse pointer over a data point if you first maximize the chart.
