The MPS Rough-Cut Capacity planning function makes it possible for you to determine, at a high-level, how a given MPS plan could affect user-defined key resources. You can define planning routings for end items, or use manufacturing bill of material and routing information to generate them automatically. MPS multiplies the planning routings by open firm and forecasted independent demand to determine the usage quantity (load) for each key resource, by week, and to identify over-capacity conditions (that is, where load exceeds capacity for a given week).
The plan is called "rough-cut" because it does not consider existing inventory or current manufacturing order, purchase order, or requisition status when calculating load. It looks only at open, independent demand — sales orders, forecasts, and issue reservations. The open quantity for each open independent demand requirement is multiplied by the per-unit quantity and added to the fixed usage quantity for each planning routing record linked to the demand record part. The lead time offset of the planning routing record is subtracted from the demand record's need date (using shop days if you selected Shop Days as the Lead Time Calculation method on the Configure Production Control Settings screen) to determine when the key resource is consumed. The usage quantities for each key resource are summarized by week and then compared to the capacity amount defined on the Manage Key Resources screen.
The Create/Update Rough-Cut Capacity Plan process also produces a report showing key resource load and capacity by week. You can run the report to show only key resources and weeks where load is over a certain percentage of capacity.
This function also generates an Overcapacity MPS action message for every weekly period where a key resource's load exceeds its capacity. These Overcapacity action messages are visible on the Manage Master Production Schedule Action Messages screen and the Print Master Production Schedule Action Message Report.
Use the fields in this block to create a new parameter ID or to retrieve a previously saved parameter ID. A parameter ID represents a set of screen selection parameters. After you have saved a parameter ID and its related parameters, you can retrieve them using Query.
You can use the retrieved parameters to produce reports and run processes more efficiently and with greater consistency. The saved parameters are also useful and necessary when you want to run the process as part of a batch job. Many users save a unique set of parameters for each different way they run a report or process. When you select a previously saved parameter ID or parameter description, the associated saved screen selection parameters automatically display as selection defaults. The page setup and print options are also included in the saved parameter ID if there are any. You can change any of the associated selection defaults as necessary.
Enter, or click to select, a parameter ID of up to 15 alphanumeric characters. Choose characters for your parameter ID that help identify the type of selections you made in the screen, such as PERIOD or QUARTERLY.
When you save your record, all the selections made in the screen are stored with the parameter ID. Later, you can retrieve the parameter using Query.
You can use the parameter to run the process more efficiently because you can select the parameter ID with its previously defined screen selections. After the default selections display in the screen, you can override the defaults.
Enter, or click to select, a parameter description of up to 30 alphanumeric characters.
This field always displays One.
Enter, or click to select, the MPS plan for which you want to generate a rough-cut capacity plan. Enter P (Production) if you want to see a rough-cut capacity plan for the official production plan. The MPS plan code determines the forecast demand quantities used when calculating planned load.
If you select any other MPS plan code, the official production plan is not affected, but MPS still considers firmed sales order and reservation demand.
Use the options in this group box to specify which key resources to include in the process and on the report.
Use the drop-down list to select the range of key resources to be included. Available options are:
All
One
Range
From Beginning
To End
The default is All.
Enter, or click to select, the key resource identifier that is the starting point of resources to be processed and printed. If you select All or From Beginning in the Option field, this field is not available.
Enter, or click to select, the key resource identifier that is the end point of resources to be processed and printed. If you select All (the default), One, or To End in the Option field, this field is not available.
From the drop-down list, select the sorting criterion:
Key Resource — The report sorts by key resource, then by week.
Resource Type — The report sorts first by resource type, then by key resource, and then by week.
Week — The report sorts by week, then by key resource.
From the drop-down list, select the type of report you want to generate:
Summary — The report displays capacity and load by key resource and week. It also breaks out load quantity by independent demand type (sales orders, reservation, and forecast). This is the default.
Detail — In addition to the information displayed in the summary report, the detail report displays the load broken out by the end item and inventory abbreviation contributing to the weekly load quantity.
Select this check box to include MPS forecasted requirements (including sales and user-defined forecast demand) generated for the selected key resources. If this check box is not selected, any load driven by forecast requirements is excluded from the report and the report's load percentage calculation. However, the forecast load quantity is still stored and available to be viewed on the View Rough-Cut Capacity Plan screen.
Enter the latest scheduled date to include in the report. This is an optional field. If you enter a date in this field, the report excludes weeks with an end date later than the one you specify.
Enter the minimum load percentage (weekly load divided by capacity) you wish to use to filter weekly figures on the report. For instance, if you enter a threshold of 100%, you will only see load information displayed for weeks where the key resource load equals or exceeds its capacity. If you leave the load threshold as zero, you see all load quantities for all weeks for all selected key resources.
