Cloning Data

Costpoint Client/Server Functionality

In client/server, the standard cloning option enables you to copy one row in the header of the document (and the associated lines from a related child table window) and then copy the data in subtasks by manually opening the subtask and choosing the Clone option again.

The following limitations apply to the cloning process:

  1. You can clone only a saved document. You cannot enter a new document or modify an existing document and clone it without first saving the document to be cloned.

  2. You can clone only one document at a time.

  3. You can clone the whole document, but you cannot clone parts of the document inside the same document. For example, you cannot clone one Journal Entry line with all the labor/non-labor information in the subtasks to create another JE line under the same JE header.

  4. You can clone only one level down (i.e., you cannot clone information in grandchild subtasks).

To overcome the limitations above, some applications use a custom cloning process.

Costpoint Web Functionality

Compared to client/server functionality, Costpoint web provides far more advanced cloning capabilities and has none of the client/server limitations outlined above, which improves the user experience and increases user data entry productivity.

In Costpoint web:

  1. You can clone new/modified documents before saving the changes. [Since Costpoint web allows you to modify multiple documents and save the changes for all of them at once, you can now add/modify any number of documents and then clone any documents (including the modified ones) without first saving the changes.]

  2. You can clone multiple documents at once.  You can select multiple documents and clone all of them at once. For example, you can select multiple projects, choose to clone them all at once, and the cloning process will copy the information from all "clonable" subtasks.

  3. You can clone a specific portion of the same document. For example, you can clone a Journal Entry line with subtask information inside the same Journal Entry document.

  4. You can clone any number of levels down in the document structure. When cloning a complex document structure which includes grandchildren (and possibly even great grandchildren), the clone process will go through all levels of the structure to copy the information. You do not need to open the subtasks and choose the Clone option again.
